Park District Board Names Interim Director

CARBONDALE - Members of the Carbondale Park District Board of Commissioners announced an interim director at their Monday meeting.

Kathy Renfro, who is currently the district's superintendent of recreation, will take the post beginning today. The executive director's post opened up earlier this month when current director Brian Ramsey announced he would be moving to Beloit, Wis., to take a similar job there.

Ramsey said he will be staying on in the job until May 2, a fact that Renfro said made her grateful.

"I am really looking forward to having Brian there," she said, before noting that it would help to make for a "smooth transition."

Commissioner Carl Flowers said he expected an ad to go out for the position on May 1 and said he was hoping the position would be filled permanently about two months afterwards.

"We'd like a person by July 1 but Sept. 1 is probably more realistic," he said.

Flowers said the position will be advertised and that commissioners intend to use networking through the state's park district association to raise awareness about the opening.

Power Plant Project Canceled

Carbondale - Plans to build a coal gasification power plant on campus have been put on hold, university officials said Thursday.

For the project to be feasible, the plant would have to be too big and too expensive to be constructed on campus, said Physical Plant Director Phil Gatton. The announcement came as the university released a "fatal flaws" study that was performed to determine whether the university should further pursue the project.

Initial plans were for the plant to produce between 150 and 200 megawatts of power. But an economically sound project would involve building an industrial-sized plant producing at least 300 megawatts of electricity, Gatton said.
